Don’t Be Fooled!

Today on Facebook, I caught an article by Fooducate (the helpful app for your smart phone).  They reported on their blog about the “Facts Up Front” plan, that is supposed to helpful to consumers on making better choices, when buying foods.

Facts Up Front is a nutrient-based labeling system that summarizes important  information from the Nutrition Facts Panel in a simple and easy-to-use format on the front of food and beverage packages.  Facts Up Front is a voluntary initiative aligned with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines and regulations.  If you’ve seen this at all on some packages – it looks like this:

Have you seen a nutrition key like these yet?

While it’s definitely a START…

BUT…without some other information, most people aren’t going to know if these numbers are too high, or if something is even good for you if they’re not educated.

Moral of the story?  If your health is important to YOU (because we know it’s important to HIM who created us!)  GET. EDUCATED. about what you’re putting in your body.

We know all ready by looking at a label like these example – 450 calories?  That’s a lot.  I’m hoping that’s a meal that includes all of the food groups…  Not knowing what this is, the sugars is high too (we shoot for under 10 grams).  While the fiber is great to know, without knowing the total carbs, you don’t know what the net carbs are?  See the holes in this idea?

When I see things like this – I think of how important it is to know all aspects of what you’re looking at:

Serving Size

Calories

Fat

Carbs

Fiber

Sugar

Sodium

….and then I think – what else am I going to be consuming WITH this – and how high is this meal total going to go??

Obviously, marketing gurus could use these “helper boxes” to their advantage, and it’s YOU and I that will pay, if we just pay attention to what they spoon feed us.   The fact that it’s voluntary and not being fully regulated, could pose a lot of problems as well.

I was reading this past week about the word “NATURAL” not being regulated…  while the word Organic is…  but even that isn’t always what we think.  When you see NATURAL on a product?  Aren’t you going to assume that it’s not containing additives?  Unfortunately…  it really doesn’t mean much at all.

Do you have any “surprises” you’ve unearthed lately that might help us all be more aware as we keep striving to be healthy for Him?  Please share!

Burn, Baby Burn…

Time to put on those shoes and feel the burn! I can't help but break into the Disco Inferno song! Burn baby burn... (picture from retro-cafe.com)

I love a good burn.

No.  Not a sunburn, although I do that quite easily…(Thank you very little age spots!)

I’m talking about AFTERburn.  The calorie burnin’ benefit you get after you exercise that sticks with you!

What is actually going on in your body, is that your increased heart rate from exercising is requiring your body to need more oxygen for a longer period of time and burns double the fat.  AND not only THAT, but depending on the type and intensity of exercise you do,  the afterburn can benefit you up to 40 hours after your work out!!  How awesome is that??

So you don’t need to feel like you “have to” work out an hour each day.  You are actually getting a great benefit for working out 20-40 minutes each day, rather than 1 hour 2-3 times a week!  Now it’s true, the longer you work out, especially after the 30 minute mark, you ARE going to burn more of that stored energy (FAT)… So if you CAN work out longer a few days a week…. then make that a priority and make that happen!

When you turn muscle into fat through purposeful exercise, you end up with more lean muscle… and muscle burns more calories each day in your body…

Not to mention that aerobic exercise helps with…

– lowering body/belly fat

– increasing your cardiovascular strength

– helping your immunity

– speeding up your metabolism and energy levels

– helping you to release GOOD hormones. (AWESOME – yes?)

Who doesn’t want all of those benefits??

ME TOO!!

God certainly made us to MOVE!

When you work out multiple days in a row, your calorie burning machine is soaring and all of the benefits I mentioned before continuing to do your body good!  You want to keep that metabolism ramped up, and continue feeling as good as possible, for as long as possible!

Do you see why I’m more focused on what I can do EACH day, instead of trying to figure out which days I’m taking off?  Why wouldn’t I want to maximize my efforts?  It’s ALWAYS easier to figure out a day to take off, then to justify squeezing in a workout at 10pm or after…   Yet if 11pm is all I have, and I’ve made that commitment to work out – I follow through.  My commitment is to God.

That said, don’t feel badly if you can’t workout everyday… you have to do what works for your schedule, but it’s KEY to make its a priority or it isn’t going to happen.  Some people are morning people.  I am not.

BUT…  I read that we MAKE TIME for what is important to us…  (and that goes for ALL areas of our life!)  Be HONEST.  With yourself and with God!  Make your health a priority and a worship to Him!

One comment I hear a lot is, “Buuuut I don’t want to get BULKY!”  Honestly, don’t get super concerned with getting too bulky.  This was a main concern of mine too early on (especially in my arms and upper legs), but what may at FIRST seem like “bigger” legs and arms, is only going to help you burn more fat and calories in the long run…  so it could happen short-term, for a long-term benefit.  (and it’s not a good excuse to not move!)  So just use lighter weights, do more reps, and lay off the muscle enhancer shakes – and you won’t look like a body builder!  We can’t spot remove fat… we have to burn overall body fat, and whittle away at the areas that need toning.

Sorry.  I know.  But that’s just the way it works!

Something that helped me after I got a handle on my BMI and recommended calories through that, are equating how much exercise would burn off a certain amount of calories.  In my mind, it was what something was “worth”… and then *I* would decide if a food was worth it before I consumed it.  So be sure you’re getting educated on everything you’re putting in and allow that afterburn to benefit you for the long haul!

” I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.”  – Psalm 139:14

Hey – I Saw That!

Do you think God cares about what goes into your body?

Do you wish someone would SLAP your hand as you reached for that second something-or-other that you shouldn’t be having… or when you mindlessly put another chip into your mouth only to wonder WHO just ate that, because you KNOW you didn’t???

I’m not sure why over eating, or eating poorly is an accepted sin in this world – but as my eyes have been opened, I began to realize how, as a society, we seem to laugh it off!  We actually joke it up about eating way more than we know we need.

It’s accepted, everywhere… even within our own churches…  I had CERTAINLY accepted this way of thinking as well.

I began thinking of all of the holidays and events CENTERED around FOOD and drinks.  AND… we aren’t talking about the healthiest food, or keeping our portions under control… but rather celebrating OVER eating!   We then justify it – because it’s what you’re suppose to do….  after all, there was just SO MUCH GOOD FOOD!!

So… EAT! EAT! EAT!  EAT until you feel sick, and then eat some more!

Ummmm….

Do you really think that’s how God wants us to act and feel?

YUCK.

I wondered… why couldn’t all holidays and get togethers be like normal days – where I felt able to make the best choices, instead of feeling like I needed to eat like it was my last meal EVER?

Suddenly my perspective was changing…  God was literally changing my heart and mind about what it meant to eat healthy for Him!  As I read different Scriptures, I began to see God’s Truth in the matter.  He was speaking right to me.  “Sara, this isn’t the last brownie to be had.  One. Is. Enough.”

Just because I loved _____(name whatever food you long for!) didn’t meant it had to rule over me…  It was to enjoy, often nourish… and I could be thankful!!  Maybe even savor it while I ate it… but be content in NOT having it consume me.   I didn’t need to be short-sighted on how it would make me feel AFTERWARDS, when I ate TOO MUCH… physically and emotionally.

Now, I’m not saying I eat perfectly now… because I don’t.   I realize we live in a fallen world, but I also don’t use that as an EXCUSE to have no self-control.  When I have weaker moments, I continue to draw that strength I need from Him.

God wasn’t asking me to eat 100% perfectly every day, but rather for us to do OUR best for Him.
