Stop Right There!

Do you like fish? Does this look like a good choice?

Do you like fish? Does this look like a good choice?

Yes, you!  I’m talking to you!
Do you know what you’re putting into your mouth?

Just a friendly reminder to read the back of any product you pick up and put into your cart.

I had a little mishap last week in regards to accidentally setting out some fish to thaw, and forgetting about them…  which made them – not so good to fix.

EMERGENCY!

I HAD TO have fish (it’s a whole other story), and we don’t have good options locally…  this was going to be a challenge.

I finally found some frozen USA fish that had the only ingredient on the package was the fish…

But not before finding some shocking things that was a great reminder of why #1 – we rarely buy foods in packages, and #2 – what the government allows in food in the name of “safe to consume”.

Um. Carbon Monoxide? This is poison to inhale... so how about if you're cooking it and it's expelling from the fish? Suddenly no longer harmful? Yikes.

Um. Carbon Monoxide? This is poison to inhale… so how about if you’re cooking it and it’s expelling from the fish? Suddenly no longer harmful? Yikes.

Clearly disturbing.

Apparently they add the Carbon Monoxide to give the meat “color”…  If you’re interested – read more about it here.

Needless to say, I won’t be making that mistake – ever.

Thankfully my mother-in-law graciously shared some fresh water fish (from family who caught and cleaned) where we know the source instead.  She just happened to have some extra in the freezer!  H-yVee did have some store packaged fish that was also USA and no additives.  Read those labels!!

“Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise Him,
    my Savior and my God.”

Psalm 42:11

  1. AMEN–I had not eaten any meat of any kind for many many many years– but when we loved to the Ozarks & right on Lake Taneycomo– a cold water lake– with wonderful rainbow trout– I started eating fish again!!! 🙂

  2. Personally I stay away from all fish right now as I’m trying to get my metals down to get rid of MS symptoms, but I used to LOVE fresh water fish… (fried of course) and tuna salad. *blush*

  3. I have had severe bilateral panuveitis (and secondary glaucoma) for nearly two years. Pots of steroid drops, steroid injections, several surgeries (including, for instance, to remove cataracts caused by the steroids!) are not working. (And tests for the major autoimmune disorders are negative. Thus did I learn the meaning of the word “idiopathic.”)

Oddly, some antibiotics seem to help, but the doctors insist there is is no infection. (And some antibiotics make it much worse. My vision fogs over immediately if I happen to ingest a sulfanomide, including simply eating meat from animals treated with antibiotics.)

Meanwhile, with all the drops and surgeries and injections, my vision continues to deteriorate. I’m now only seeing light and color in the right eye.

I’m not sure what I’m asking, maybe a hint where to go for the toxicity testing? (I live in Southern California.) I’ve just started experimenting with a paleo-type diet (I’ve been off gluten for nearly a year).

Maybe I’m writing just to reach out to someone else who has been through this. I’m losing all confidence in the experts’ ability to pinpoint a cause or a remedy, but will “sing to the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things!” Psalm 98:1..

    • I would seek out a naturopath or holistic doctor. This link should put you in the right direction. http://www.calnd.org/

I would say if you could go on a Auto-Immune (revised Paleo) diet – you could figure out quickly on your own which foods were bothering you by sampling them back in after a time of removing them all. Most inflammatory foods (gluten is the worst, followed by dairy, and yeast, all grains…. etc)
http://www.thepaleomom.com/2013/05/important-updates-to-the-autoimmune-protocol.html (This site is very helpful) My test was only for 100 some foods – but they have ones for 300+ foods – I just wanted a ball park. I quickly learned all nuts were an issue, and eventually seeds as well.

I feel for you with the eye swelling – it’s so painful and restricting… I can imagine you’re worn out. I so understand that. It’s hard for western medicine to connect that our symptoms are caused by food or how Cross contaminated meats could make someone SO sick. I totally get you… it’s very real when you’re the one dealing with it. Good for you for reaching out and seeking other options that get to the SOURCE of the problem! God bless your journey and write anytime!

    • One other thing – I would make sure you’re not drinking coffee, or tea – and cut out nuts. Those things were major triggers for uveitis/photophobia for me. While everyone is different, he coffee and tea are not part of the Paleo type diet anyway, and nuts (like peanuts and almonds) are inflammatory. If you can get preservative free (no gluten, nuts, yeast, dairy, etc) TUMERIC capsules too – take them daily…. they help so much.

  4. Thank you for your quick response and the information! Can’t tell you how wonderful it feels to be heard.

    • I totally get that. Nothing is worse than feeling like you’re losing it because no one is listening – and you KNOW there is more to what is going on. Good for you for seeking and searching! May your vision and health be restored as you continue doing what you can. God Bless! 🙂
