Recipe for Healthy Friendship

I’ve heard it said that you find out who your true friends are, in times of distress.  It’s true.  Some of my closest friends are the ones that stood by me – or helped me through rough times.

Would you agree?  Knowing someone cares, when you need it most – matters.

What about you?  Can you think of a friend or two who pushes you to be the best you can be?

God tells us, in His Word, to be close with other believers, and that iron will sharpen iron.  Your closest friends, should be pushing you, and encouraging you – with your relationship with God… in good times and bad.

Recently my daughter’s Bright Lights group held a mother/daughter tea.  The key speakers were college aged girls who shared a recipe for friendship.  I enjoyed it so much – I wanted to share it with you.  It helped me realize who my friends were, and how to be a better friend to others.  The whole thing revolves around our relationship with God – being the NUMBER ONE relationship.

When we are right with God – it’s easy to let offenses from others go.  Why is that?  Because we KNOW what He wants for us, we remember what He did for us.  When we put ourselves before God, it’s easy to let those grudges settle in and take a foothold!  {and BOY can they!}

Good friends aren’t jealous, they don’t envy, their friendship isn’t conditional on something they can get from you!  If they’re like my good friends, they love the Lord with all of their heart, soul and strength, and they push you to do the same!

So here it is …

– 7 CUPS OF BEING BEST FRIENDS WITH GOD. {But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit. 1 Cor. 6:17}

– 6 PINTS OF WALKING WITH GOD {And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together,   as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another —and all the more as you see the Day approaching.  Heb. 10:24-25}  *this is why church attendance and Bible study are so important!

– 5 LBS OF REAL HONESTY {Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Romans 12:15}  *Real friends are lovingly honest.  They want the best for you!

– 4 BUSHELS OF COMMITMENT TO GIVING {David saw that Saul had come out to seek his life. David was in the wilderness of Ziph at Horesh. And Jonathan, Saul’s son, rose and went to David at Horesh, and strengthened his hand in God. And he said to him, “Do not fear, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you. You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you.  Saul my father also knows this.”  1 Sam. 23:15-17}  *Real friends do all they can to help you, when in need.

– 3 GALLONS OF CHOOSING FRIENDS WISELY {Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. Proverbs 13:20 & The fruit of the righteous is  a tree of life, and whoever  captures souls is wise. Proverbs 11:30}  *As my husband says, watch out for what type of kool-aid people are drinking – if God’s word warns against it, be aware!

– 2 YARDS OF INCLUSION {But to all who did receive Him, who believed in his name, He gave the right to become children of God  John 1:12} *It’s ok to be friendly with non-believers, but obviously you’re not going to them for counsel.  The standard is in God’s Word, so compare up!

– 1 PECK OF YOUNG AND OLD {The relationship of Paul and Timothy reflects this} *Unlike grade school, your friends don’t need to be only people your own age.  It’s helpful to have mentors, and be mentors… with all ages.
