Finding True J.O.Y.

Mmmm Cookies!

When the cookie plate used to come around – I would pick out the most perfect cookie.   The largest one, with the MOST chocolate chips.  I also had a hard time sharing dessert – even with my husband.  Sad, I know.  (Especially since he’s the complete opposite, and would give me the entire dessert if I asked – love him!)

You may or may not have heard the acronym J.O.Y. – Putting your life in order so that Jesus comes first, then Others, THEN yourself.

Definitely a different concept than the world teaches.

It’s ALL ABOUT YOU.  Yourself.  Self-actualization.  Making the MOST of yourself.  Doing what feels right to YOU to make YOU happy.

WOW.

Let’s see what Scripture says:

“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

Who, being in the very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,

but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” – Philippians 2:5-7

OUCH.

Obviously not the same as the world.

I ran into a friend this weekend, who shared with me what was going on in her life.  She’s courting with a boy, but because of the social media aspect – and another girl who possibly also liked this boy – she didn’t want to make the relationship “Facebook official”, to be sensitive to this person’s feelings.

Now, this person isn’t a REAL friend, or even really anything in her life other than a Facebook acquaintance – but shes’ choosing to put this person’s heart, and feelings BEFORE her own.

*slap*

It really made me think about other things… things I might have said or done, knowing it was hurtful to someone else but justifying it because I was hurt.

The internet makes it possible to zing people – and most people might even not realize what is going on, but the person you’re zinging knows.  More importantly, God knows.

Now, I know – there are times – we unintentionally do things that can hurt others… and we feel terrible – because it wasn’t our intention.  I get that.  It’s not going against your convictions to please others, or changing who God designed you to be.

This is about stopping putting YOUR “selfish” desires first, not your Godly desires – things you KNOW might hurt another person in your life, things you know are selfish AND you have the power to stop it….but you do it anyway, because you’re putting yourself FIRST.  It’s stopping it when you know it isn’t right, before that other person has the potential to be hurt.  I know God has made progress in me on that, as I’ve tried to be sensitive to other’s feelings,  but I also know after hearing my friend speak about how sensitive she was being – I was encouraged as to why we do it.  I pray God would continue to convict me on the things I do and say.  Are they pleasing to Him or the world?  Do we do them for show, acceptance, or worldly praise?

When the cookie plate used to come around – and I would pick out the most perfect cookie…  I never felt good about that, other than glad I was temporarily got the cookie I wanted (and the pounds to go with it).   But now, I’m even MORE filled up, knowing it isn’t a cookie that is going to bring me lasting joy.  {and neither is any other earthly thing} It’s ok if someone gets a bigger cookie on the plate, (or in life.)  That’s not me being complacent, it’s called peace.  I also realize if God can conquer the small things [like dessert] in my life… He can conquer the BIGGER things too!

Thanks be to Him!  Practice makes progress!

What type of health battles is He conquering in YOUR life today?

“But godliness with contentment is great gain.  For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.  But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.” – 1 Timothy 6:6-8
